A magnetic head slider comprises a slider body (86) with an air bearing surface opposed to a magnetic disk, a magnetic head (32a) including a magnetoresistive element (MR element) provided on the slider body, first and second terminals (94,96) connected with the MR element, and a switching element (110) for short-circuiting between the first and second terminals depending on an external input. According to this arrangement, the MR element can be protected against damage due to static electricity. Preferably, the switching element is a phototransistor in consideration of the productivity of the magnetic disk device. In this case, an external input is light incident on the phototransistor, and when the magnetic head slider is stored in the disk enclosure and shielded from light, the phototransistor is turned off and a sense current flows into the MR element.
