PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost device of small hardware scale by using one focus evaluation value calculating part (activity calculating part) for automatic focusing(AF) operation as well as fixed length compression code encoding. CONSTITUTION:It is considered that the activity calculating part for AF and that for fixed length compression code encoding extract the same information, one activity calculating part is used for them. This device is provided with an image pickup element 105, an A-D conversion means 105 which subjects the output of this element 103 to A-D conversion, a parameter calculating part 118 which receives the output of the A-D conversion means 105 to indicate the extent of the change of a picture, an AF means which performs AF based on this parameter, and a compression processing means 115 which changes the degree of compression of the output of the A-D conversion means 105 in accordance with this parameter. By this constitution, AF and compression processing of the picked-up image signal are performed based on the parameter calculated by the single parameter means 118. |
