The invention particularly concerns the reduction of particulate contamination from diesel engines and describes an effective and low cost absorption method. A unit designed for the diminution of pollution from exhaust gases for integration with the exhaust pipe of the vehicle comprises : (a) microporous metallic barriers enclosing porous pumice stones to retain and partially degrade particles and greases in the exhaust gases ; (b) means for allowing a periodic burning(apart from the functioning of the engine) of the non-degraded accumulated particles and greases in the microfiltration system, by an electric current through a resistance ; (c) calcareous stones situated downstream from the metallic barriers and pumice stones to lower the concentration of carbon monoxide by chemical transformation to carbon dioxide ; the efficiency of this conversion is maintained due to the pre-purification of the gases from particles.
