The system uses a number of fan and filter units mounted on each lamp post. The system for cleaning the air breathed by pedestrians includes filters (1) which may be attached to street lamp posts mounted along the edge of the pavement. The filter unit is attached to the lamp post at a height of 1 - 2 m above the ground. Filtered air is directed towards the pavement, and provided cleaner air to breath over a region (5) which encompasses the area through which pedestrians, children and animals walk. By mounting a number of such filters at intervals of 5 - 10 m along the pavement, it is possible to produce a corridor of clean air through which pedestrians can pass. Each filter unit includes a fan of power 100-200W, and a filter which can be replaced, which is designed to trap the pollutant particles found in city environments.
