The system uses an IR or radio link to enable testing of operation. The fuel pump includes a fuel tank (12) and a pump (14) supplying fuel via a pipe (16) to a meter (18) which measures the volume of fuel being delivered. Fuel passes via a further pipe (20) to the flexible hose (22) leading to the dispensing holster nozzle (24). A display (26) shows the quantity and price of fuel being dispensed. A processor (28) controls the operation of the pump, and also includes a diagnostic program for detecting any malfunction within the fuel pump assembly. The processor includes a remote wireless link (32) enabling remote monitoring of the operation of the pump. The link may be IR, radio, telephone or satellite, and enables an interface with diagnostic equipment, including a keyboard, mouse and display, so that the detailed operation may be checked by a technician.
