Chlorine-containing alkanes (e.g. 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,2,2-trichloroethane) are obtained from corresponding alkenes or alkanes by UV-activated chlorination in the gas phase or liquid phase, using elemental chlorine and UV light with a wavelength of not less than 280 nm. Production of pentachloroethane (I), 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,2,2-trichloroethane (II), 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,2-dichloroethane (III) or 1,1,1,2-tetra-chloro-2,2-difluoroethane (IV) by C-C double bond/chlorine addition or by hydrogen-chlorine exchange, and for the production of pure 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (V) from the crude compound contaminated with compounds containing C=C double or triple bonds. The chlorination process involves contacting the starting materials in the gas phase or liquid phase with elemental chlorine under irradiation with UV light with a wavelength of not less than 280 nm.
