[Classes 2(ii) and 15(ii)] Artificial filaments, straws, ribbons or the like, particularly those having a basis of a cellulose ester or a cellulose ether, have a neutral grey shade or a black colouration due to colloidal graphite being distributed throughout their substance. The graphite may be incorporated in a spinning solution, and after being spun into a setting medium to produce filaments of a neutral grey shade, the materials are coloured by a dyestuff having direct affinity therefor ; by this method only a small quantity of the dyestuff is used. The spinning solution is prepared by shaking together a thick paste containing the colloidal graphite and the ingredients of the spinning solution, with a quantity of the solvent employed in the solution, the weight of the solvent being from eight to twelve times that of the paste. By varying the quantity of graphite employed from 0.02 per cent. to 3.0 per cent. of the weight of materials produced, the depth of shade can be varied from pale neutral grey to jet black.
