Process for thermally hardening layer edges of profiled surfaces uses an energy beam, preferably an electron beam which is directed onto the surface of a component with high frequency and velocity. A function for the energy transfer parameters is mathematically determined according to the geometry of the surface, the material properties and the hardening depth. An energy transfer field with a defined energy density distribution is modeled according to this function. The energy transfer field is fed relatively over the surface to be hardened.
