A pressureless electric water heater for domestic use has a cylindrical doublewalled tank (3) for holding a quantity of a heat transfer liquid (3) such as water, heated by an electric heating element (11) that extends down from a hinged tank top (10). Cold water flowing through an immersed coil (7) is heated by the heat transfer liquid (3) and exits the coil (7) as hot water. The hinged top (10) allows easy access to the interior of the tank (2) and to the heating element (11); further easing access and replacement thereof. A sensor block (120) is used to activate the heating element (11) whenever water is introduced into the coils (7). An automatic fill valve (112) maintains the tank level. A top-nesting container can hold the heating element (11) and thermostat (14), allowing for easier repairs.
