A staple forming mechanism having at least first and second configurations, the forming mechanism including: (a) a bend plate assembly (110) having a top surface engageable with a crown portion of a staple (136), the top bend surface having a first surface width in the first configuration, and a second surface width greater than the first width in the second configuration; and (b) a former assembly (65) having at least two operative side portions (72) disposed laterally adjacent and on opposite sides of the top bend surface and engageable with leg portions (138) of the staple, the operative side portions being separated by a former space that has a first former width in the first configuration, and a second former width greater than the first former width in the second configuration; wherein the operative side portions (72) and the bend plate (110) are operatively associated and movable to a forming position with the bend plate (110) disposed in the former space for such that the operative side portions (72) bend legs of a staple about the bend plate to produce first or second crown widths of the staple corresponding to the first or second widths when in the first or second configurations, respectively. Staplers for stapling staples of different crown size are also included, as well as staplers including the above-described staple forming mechanism.
