The gearbox operating method has a gear changing control which responds to the detected position of the gear shift lever (18), provided via at least 2 redundant position detection devices, for providing corresponding control signals for an actuator used to select the gear ratio, with control of the actuator by a replacement characteristic when the position detection devices provide different gear shift lever positions. An Independent claim for an automobile automatic gearbox is also included.
