The invention relates to a cutting insert for camshaft milling cutters, consisting of a substantially cuboid cutting body (1), comprising an upper surface (2) and a lower surface (3) which is substantially parallel to said upper surface, four lateral surfaces (4, 4') and cutting edges (5, 6, 7) which are formed along the intersections of the lateral surfaces (4, 4') with the upper surface (2) and/or the lower surface (3) and comprising a corresponding side milling cutter. The invention aims to provide a cutting insert and a corresponding side milling cutter which are easier to manufacture and which can be used effectively to produce cam profiles with a linear principal cross-section that is parallel to an axis, for example, cylindrical, with bevelled edges and/or reduced-diameter projections on one or both sides. According to the invention, to achieve this, the upper surface (2) and/or the lower surface (3) have raised corner areas (8) on diagonally opposing corners, which project above the plane of the upper or lower surface (2, 3) and extend as far as the lateral surfaces (4, 4') in such a way, that the cutting edges (5, 6, 7) are formed at least partially by the intersection of the lateral surfaces (4, 4') with the surface of the raised corner areas (8). |
