<p>An apparatus for removing a top head cover from a delayed coking drum includes a column and a hollow tube slidably nested over the column and secured to the cover. The column has a generally cylindrical surface and is fixed positionally relative to the drum. A groove is provided in the surface of the column. The groove has a generally longitudinal lower segment and a sloped upper segment. A pressurized cylinder is affixed to the tube, and a piston is slidably disposed in the cylinder and affixed to the column, so that axial movement of the piston relative to the cylinder imparts axial movement of the tube relative to the column. A bearing is secured to the tube and rides in the groove of the column. The bearing is disposed in the lower segment of the groove when the cover is positioned to close the drum. The tube moves (i) axially relative to the column when the bearing rides up the lower segment of the groove, so as to lift the cover away from the top flange, and (ii) axially and rotationally relative to the column when the bearing rides up the upper segment of the groove, so as to lift and swing the cover away from the top flange.</p> |
