The appts. to coat a moving substrate surface (6) with a flow mass (2,2'), from a supply chamber (7,8), is structured so that the chamber (7,8) partially covers the material (6) surface flanked by a sealing gap (14) and an exit gap (18) at the entry and outlet sides. The supply chamber is divided into an initial holding chamber (7) and a main holding chamber (8), to prevent the development of air bubbles in the coating medium (2,2'). The divider (10), between the chamber sections (7,8), also sets the gap (15) between the chamber and the moving web (6).
