FOAM BUFFING PAD OF STRING-LIKE MEMBERS AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF

A polymeric foam finishing pad (50) is made by attaching an array of foam fingers (52) to a suitable support substrate (14). The foam fingers are attached to the substrate in a continuous strip of interconnected fingers or may be individually inserted into a support substrate and attached to the substrate by an adhesive layer. Each of the foam members (60) is preferably formed in and cut from an advancing foam strip (83) and folded and inserted into a preformed opening (72) contained in the support substrate (58) such that each foam member forms a pair of fingers (52) that extend from the front face of the support substrate. The outer tip of each foam finger (60) may include a pair of slits extending into the foam member from the outer tip (54) to divide each outer tip (54) into a plurality of contact tips (64), thereby increasing the amount of surface contact between the finishing pad (10) and the surface being finished.
