[Class 106 (i)] In card feeding and reading means for recordcard-controlled machines, a contact roller 20 coacts with a card hole reading brush 19, rollers 18 feed the cards to the contact rollers at one peripheral speed and the contact roller is driven at a higher peripheral speed through a friction clutch 20, 25, Fig. 2, which slips under the drag applied by the card and the reading brush. In this way the points of contact between brush 19 and roller 20 are constantly changing and prevent burring of the contact roller. The invention is applied to a sorting machine as in Specification 391,496. A worm 21 on the shaft 14 drives a wheel 22 rigid with shaft 23 together with an insulating bush 24. The reduced part of bush 24 is a free running fit inside the roller 20, but the annular surface 25 contacts frictionally with the end of roller 20 under the action of a spring 31 pressing against an insulating bush 28. This bush 28 fits tightly into roller 20 and fits tightly on to a metal bush 29 which runs freely on shaft 23. Roller 20 is of slightly greater diameter than rollers 18 but is retarded to substantially an equal peripheral speed when a card is being read.
