A catalyst which is highly active in the oligomerization of ethylene and with which the generation of by-products such as heavy ingredients and wax ingredients is slight; and a process for producing an α-olefin with the catalyst. The catalyst for α-olefin production is obtained by contacting (a) a clay, clay material, or ion-exchanging lamellar compound with (b) a complex of a transition metal in Groups 8 to 10 of the Periodic Table for 10 minutes or longer. The process for producing an α-olefin comprises using the catalyst to oligomerize ethylene. The catalyst is one obtained by bringing (a') a clay, clay mineral, or ion-exchanging lamellar compound which has been treated with an alkylating agent into contact with (b) a transition metal complex containing as the central metal a transition metal in Groups 8 to 10 of the Periodic Table, and is characterized in that when the ingredient (a') is suspended in an inactive medium, the amount of the alkylating agent eluted in the medium is 1 mmol or smaller per g of the ingredient (a').
|
