The array has a predefinable number of optical fibres held by a holding and positioning arrangement formed of at least two identical plates (1,2) arranged one on top of the other with columnar recesses (11,21). The recesses in the first and second plates are mutually orthogonal and optical fibres (4) are inserted into the aligned guides thus formed and embedded in shape-locking manner, whereby the maximum applicable number of fibres corresponding to the square product of the number of columnar recesses in a plate. An Independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a two-dimensional fibre array.
