515,250. Refining iron, &c. SOC. D'ELEC-. TRO - CHIMIE, D'ELECTRO - METALLURGIE, ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D'UGINE. March 23, 1938, No. 8958. Convention date, March 26, 1937. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] In a process for rapidly effecting metallurgical reactions in the presence of a controlled gaseous atmosphere, part at least of the reactants being liquid, the reactants are brought together, without applying external heat, in a gas-tight apparatus which is so shaped and animated with a regular or irregular rocking or rotating movement that there is caused an intermixing and interpenetration of the reactant and agitation of the mixture so produced, the apparatus being, if desired, provided with means for introducing gas into and for removing gas from the same. If another gas is evolved in the process, the gas pressure is allowed to rise to such an extent so as to restrain this evolution and prevent it interfering with the main operation especially when the latter is concerned with the dephosphorisation and/or desulphurisation of ferrous metal. The process may be carried out in apparatus comprising a casing 3 having two chambers 1, 2 and mounted on an axis 5 so that it can be rocked to cause a violent intermixing of metal 6 and slag 7. The casing 3 is provided with a gas-tight cover 9 which is provided with a safety. valve 14 and may be provided with valved conduits for the removal or supply of gas. The apparatus may be used for the deoxidation of metals and alloys with a reducing slag, the oxygen initially present being removed or diluted by the addition of inert gas or for the decarburization of metals and alloys such as ferro-chromium, the gases produced being removed during the process. Specifications 477,083, and 499,302, and French Specification 780,125 are referred to.
|
