PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for widening capable of preventing the generation of wrinkles even when 5% or more size change in a width direction occurs and being excellent in widening capacity, being simple in a device, easily installed even in water or the like, and being applicable for wet type processing or the like. SOLUTION: A widening method is such that a part of a base material 1 is nipped at 21 between discs 2 axially rotated through the running force of a base material 1 and after the discs 2 at a given angle are axially rotated, operation to release the nipped base material 1 is applied, in order, to long base materials running in the direction of length. A widening device is provided with the discs 2 repeating partial distance under axial rotation in a home position and releasing the base material 1 after a part of the running long base material is nipped and axially rotated in a given angle arc. Thus, axial rotation of the disc 2 provides a widening function and is excellent in widening capacity, a widening amount is regulated through control of a disc diameter, the disc 2 is rotated by the running force of the base material and a need for a different rotation device source is eliminated, and a device is miniaturized and simplified.
