PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning mechanism of an ophthalmic apparatus which allows quick alignment and focusing regardless of the shape of the face of a subject. SOLUTION: The mechanism of this invention includes: an alignment optical system 2 which applies light to the anterior part of the eye E to be examined to detect Purkinje images; a focusing optical system 3 which applies light to the anterior part from a diagonal direction to detect the reflected light from the opposite diagonal direction; and a drive means by which a main optical system placement part B having the alignment optical system 2 and the focusing optical system 3 is moved relatively to the eye to be examined. The standby position of the main optical system is set in the mid position of stroke in front of and behind the position, and when no Purkinje images are detected at the start of actuation, the drive means advances the main optical system; when Purkinje images are detected, the drive means temporarily moves the main optical system backward. The driven means advances the main optical system from the time when the Purkinje images are no longer detected.
