PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inspect a cigarette during the manufacture and packaging of cigarette to suppress the malfunction by moving a specific pressing rod in axial direction toward an end of a cigarette. SOLUTION: The electric field, magnetic field or electromagnetic field applied to a sensor 32 is influenced by the position of a pressing rod 35 characterized by the generation of a signal corresponding to the position of the pressing rod 35. Since the rod is axially transferred toward an end of a cigarette, the pressing rod 35 takes a position other than the ideal position when the cigarette is absent or is wrongly formed.
