PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decompose dioxins in dust economically and safely by a method in which a powdery catalyst having a dioxin decomposition capacity is contacted with dust discharged from a melting furnace, an electric furnace, and the like, and dioxins contained in the dust is decomposed. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas containing dust generated in a refuse incineration furnace, a melting furnace for an incineration residue such as incineration ash and fly ash generated in the refuse incineration furnace, a steel-making electric furnace for melting metal scraps, and the like is treated by a dust collector, e.g. a bag house so that the dust is separated from the gas. Since dioxins are contained in the dust, when the dioxins are decomposed, for example, a closed, externally heating rotary kilm is used as a treatment apparatus. The dust and a powdery catalyst, which are placed in an inner cylinder 12, are brought into contact with each other under heating by passing heating gas through a hollow part 13 between outer and inner cylinders 11, 12 while they are rotated integrally to decompose the dioxins.
