PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find out elements related to an element specified by a user from a document group consisting of plural documents and display the found elements on the basis of document link information defined between documents or in a certain document and a link propagation condition set up by the user at the time of reading the document group. SOLUTION: The hypertext document display system has a function for displaying the logical elements of plural documents as indexes. Indexes are displayed by setting up a logical element specified by a user out of a noticed document as a focus element, deriving other logical elements related to the focus element as related elements and distinguishing these elements. These related elements are derived on the basis of a specified focus element group and a prescribed link propagation condition. For instance, the derivation of the related elements is executed by algorithm connecting plural filters in series. The user can derives related elements corresponding to a user's request by setting up a propagation condition in each filter or rearranging the array of filters.
