The column has a tubular stand (1) containing, concentrically with its centre lengthwise axis (3), a pneumatic or hydro-pneumatic length-adjustment. The housing (4) for the length-adjustment is radially supported inside the tubular stand and moves towards the axis. The free end of the piston rod (7) is fixed to a base plate (9) belonging to the tubular stand and possesses an opening (38) with the piston rod being elastically locked to the base plate. A fixture pin going through the opening in the base plate is connected to the piston rod and has a locking ring gripping behind the base plate with the locking-ring being part of a holder (16) on the free end of the piston rod.
