PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pile driver and a pile driving method capable of preventing an disadvantage produced by an increase in height dimension. SOLUTION: A pile driver 1 comprises a two vertical supporting mechanisms 13 and 13 fixed to each other through a connection column 9 and an upper horizontal member 7 and a hydraulic cylinder system disposed between the vertical supporting mechanisms 13 and 13 and an upper horizontal member 7. Outer tubes 12 and 12 of two hydraulic cylinders are disposed vertically between the vertical supporting mechanisms 13 and 13 in parallel with each other, each cylinder rod 25 is fixed to the upper horizontal member 7, and each outer tube 12 is made movable downward.
