PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain exposure control with excellent accuracy for a camera using an image pickup element such as a CCD without increasing its circuit scale and changing a diaphram mechanism. SOLUTION: An image pickup element 10 applies photoelectric conversion to image pickup light of an object through a lens 1, a signal amplifier circuit 12 amplifies the electric signal, the amplified signal is given to a signal processing circuit 13, where prescribed signal processing is conducted and a luminance of the object is detected. Furthermore, a diaphram drive means 6 controls a diaphram 4, a storage time control means 11 controls an electronic shutter speed of the image pickup element 10 to conduct exposure control through these controls. In this case, the exposure control is switched depending on a photographing state and a diaphram priority mode is automatically selected just before main photographing.
