PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a known sewing machine having an overload clutch in such a manner that the work for the sewing machine may be decreased for an operator and the manipulation of the operator in the abnormal situation is entirely noninfluential and that the load on the sewing machine in case of the occurrence of lock is lowered. SOLUTION: The overload clutch is formed as a friction clutch and is drivably coupled to a drive shaft 5. A position sensor 51 of this time is so constituted that, in case of the occurrence of the lock, the impartation of a signal to a controller 55 is interrupted and as a result thereof, the controller 55 stops a drive motor 57.
