PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical branching device for multimodes which is easy to handle and is low in cost by including a tapered part which has a polygonal tapered structure and branches an incident beam, a waveguide which propagates the branched beams and lenses which converge the branched beams. SOLUTION: This device includes the tapered part 3 which has the polygonal tapered structure and branches the incident light, the waveguide 4 which propagates the branched beams and the lenses 2 which converge the branched beams. The light emitted from the tapered part 3 is made discrete in a far-field pattern(FFP) by the design of the tapered part 3 and the optical branching is executed by using this FFP. The exit side of the tapered part 3 is integrally provided with the waveguide part 4 which propagates the light beam after the optical branching so as to prevent the propagation of this FFP in the space. The front end of the waveguide part 4 is provided with the lenses 2 for condensing the branched light beam by as much as the number of branches. The light beams branched by the lenses 2 are condensed and are made incident on a high receiving side optical fiber 6.
