PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optically resolve the subject compound for producing a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals, liquid crystals, etc., by making a microorganism having the stereoselective ester hydrolytic activity, its cultured product, an enzyme, etc., act on a racemic specific nitrile compound. SOLUTION: A microorganism having the stereoselective ester hydrolytic activity such as a microorganism belonging to the genus Pseudomonas [e.g. Pseudomonas sp. DS-K-717 strain (FERM BP-7077)] or a microorganism belonging to the genus Enterobacter [e.g. Enterobacter sp. DS-S-75 strain (FERM BP-5494)], a cultured product of the microorganism or an enzyme derived from the microorganism is made to act on a racemic 4-halogeno-3- alkanoyloxybutyronitrile represented by formula I (R is a 2-4C alkanoyl group) (e.g. 4-chloro-3-acetoxybutyronitrile) to produce the objective optically active compounds represented by formulae II and III and useful as a raw material, etc., for medicines, agrochemicals, ferroelectric liquid crystals, optically active polymers, etc.
