PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyester improved in the capacity of trapping calcium ions by polycondensing 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexacarboxylic acid with dihydric alcohols in the presence or absence of an esterification catalyst. SOLUTION: This polyester is obtained by polycondensing 1,2,3,4,5,6- cyclohexanehexacarboxylic acid and, optionally, other polybasic carboxylic acids with dihydric alcohols at 40-250 deg.C in the presence or absence of an inert diluent and in the presence or absence of an esterification catalyst. The 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexacarboxylic acid is used in an amount of 0.1-1.1 mol per mol of the total of the dihydric alcohols used. The polyester is used in a detergent composition as a component of a detergent builder, and the detergent composition comprises 0.1-50 wt.% above builder and 1-50 wt.% anionic or cationic surfactant.
