PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for replacing an elevator main rope enabling simple and smooth work. SOLUTION: First, a joisting jig 7 for hoisting and replacing a balance weight 4 is arranged in a proper upper place in a hoistway 10 using a part above a ceiling of a car 1 moved to an upper place in the hoistway 10 as a scaffold, and a work scaffold 15 for hoisting and replacing the balance weight 4 is provided on the hoisting jig 7. Then, the car 1 is moved to a lower place in the hoistway 10 and is fixed, and the balance weight 4 moved upward is put on the work scaffold 15 to exchange and hoist from an old main rope 6 to the hoisting jig 7. After that, the old main rope 6 is removed from the car 1 fixed on a lower part in the hoistway 10, one end of a new main rope 6a and the other end thereof are attached to the car 1 and the balance weight 4, respectively, to return the balance weight 4 to a predetermined position, and then the car 1 is lifted to remove the work scaffold 15 and the hoisting jig 7 using the part above the ceiling of the car 1 as the scaffold 15.
