PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the restoration when a cage of a hydraulic elevator is in the vicinity of the uppermost story and a catch mechanism as a safety device is operated. SOLUTION: When a catch mechanism is operated, plunger 6b is lowered by a predetermined stroke to loosen a main rope 4, a catch restoring jig 21 having a clearance escaping from a screw part of a shackle rod in the longitudinal direction is inserted between a set screw 8a of the shackle rod 8 and a fixed member 7, and then the plunger is lifted by a predetermined stroke. Consequently, even if a cage 1 is in the vicinity of the uppermost story, the cage 1 is lifted by a length of the catch restoring jig to return the catch mechanism.
