PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously repeat a series of operations for recording of an image onto a recording medium by controlling film feed of a roll film being an object so as to detect a partition of the film one by one frame each with high accuracy thereby picking up the image on the film with an image pickup element. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with an image pickup element drive circuit 4 that drives an image pickup element 303, a diaphram 2 that adjusts a luminous quantity, a film feed mechanism section 16 that moves a roll film in a prescribed direction, a film feed mechanism control section 14 that controls the mechanism section 16, a focus signal detection section 7 that detects a focus signal from an output signal from the image pickup element 303, an image information detection section 5 that detects a area of a white part and a black part from an image on the film, an area detection section 6 that specifies an insertion range of identification information denoted in character or figures photographed and inserted by contents identification of the image on the film from the output signal of the detection section 5, and an identification information discrimination section 8 that detects the identification information from the output signal from the detection section 6 and the output signal from the detection section 7.
