PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of overflow at the time of rotational drive of a washing/spin-dry basket when there is the water above the settable maximum water level in the washing/spin-dry basket before the start of operation of a washing machine having a stroke of a spraying the water into the washing/ spin-dry basket with centrifugal force by rotating the washing/spin-dry basket. SOLUTION: The washing/spin-dry basket in which wash is housed is freely rotatably housed into an outer tank and the water level in the washing/spin-dry basket is detected by a water level detecting means 21. The washing/spin-dry basket is rotationally driven by a motor 11 and the number of revolutions of the washing/spin-dry basket is detected by a rotation detecting means 20. A control means 26 successively controls a series of strokes of washing, rinsing and dehydrating and changes the number of revolutions at the time of rotational drive of the washing/spin-dry basket in the washing stroke to a value lower than the number of revolutions at the settable maximum water level when there is the water above the settable maximum water level in the washing/ spin-dry basket before the start of the operation.
