A process for the preparation of alkyl 3-(7-benzyloxy-3-quinolyl)-2-halopropionates useful as intermediates for the synthesis of 5-[(7-benzyloxy-3-quinolyl)methyl]-2,4-thiazolidinedione having an antihyperglycemic effect, which comprises using 7-benzyloxy-2-halo-3-quinolinecarbaldehyde or 7-hydroxy-3-quinolinenitrile as the starting material.
