Magnesium ions, a complexing agent and a buffer are added to an acidic aluminum solution or dispersion, which is then passed through an extraction column where the aluminum complex is collected. A method for the separation, recovery and/or analysis of aluminum present in a solution or dispersion comprises the following steps : (A) an acid is added to the optionally diluted solution or dispersion, then after mixing well the mixture is heated to 100 deg.C for less than 20 minutes before being allowed to cool to room temperature ; (B) a first reagent (I) containing magnesium ions is mixed with the mixture from step (A) ; (C) a second reagent (II) containing a substance that can form a complex with aluminum is mixed with the mixture from step (B) ; (D) a buffer solution (III) is mixed with the mixture from step (C) in order to provide a suitable pH for (II) to form a complex with aluminum ; (E) optionally the pH of the solution from step (D) is altered ; (F) the mixture from step (E) is passed through a solid phase extraction column suitable for collecting the aluminum complex ; and (G) the column is eluted with a lower alcohol. |
