PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having an on-chip color filter structure which can be formed with high definition and a high opening rate by reducing the size of contact holes without decreasing the productivity. SOLUTION: The device has an on-chip color filter structure in which a gate insulating film 10 and a passivation film 11 are removed in the pixel opening 6 where a color filter 8 is to be formed. The film thickness of the color filter where the pattern of the color filter 8 is to be formed on the step such as a source of a thin film transistor 3 is reduced than the film thickness of the color filter on the pixel opening 6.
