PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device having high-quality display performance without giving adverse influences on the liquid crystal such as disturbance of alignment of the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: The spacer for a liquid crystal display device to be used for an IPS(in-plane switching) liquid crystal display device and/or VA(vertical alignment) liquid crystal display device has the following characteristics in the chromatography which uses the spacer for a liquid crystal display device as a stationary phase to pack the column, uses a liquid having 8.5 to 23.5 solubility parameter (cal/cm3) as a mobile phase, and passes liquid crystal molecules through the column. The elution volume of liquid crystal molecules having fluorine-contg. phenylcyclohexyl groups is larger than the elution volume of liquid crystal molecules having structure with substitution of cyanophenyl groups for the fluorine-contg. phenylcyclohexyl groups.
