PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color synthesizing optical system for synthesizing colors by means of a mirror, and which is inexpensive, but, provided with a fine image forming performance. SOLUTION: A dichroic film 6 is formed on the surface of a dichroic mirror 5. A light beam which is emitted from a display panel 1 and which is shown by an arrowαis transmitted through the condenser lens 3 and the dichroic mirror 5, and a light beam which is emitted from a display panel 2 and which is shown by an arrowβis reflected by the dichroic mirror 5 after being transmitted through a condenser lens 4 and a dummy glass 8, then, the light beamsαandβare synthesized so as to become a light beam shown by an arrowγ. The dummy glass 8 is provided with a function of making the optical path of the light beam shown by the arrowβoptically equivalent to the optical path of the light beam shown by the arrowα. Even if the light beam shown by the arrowβis partly reflected by the incident surface of the dummy glass 8 and the light becomes an unnecessary light beam shown by a dotted arrow d, the light beam never reaches a projection surface, so that the occurrence of a problem is prevented.
