PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for updating map data for a vehicle navigation apparatus are provided which enables to perform the path guidance easily using an updated information in case of establishing RG(Route Guidance) path between a present location and a destination location. CONSTITUTION: A method for updating map data for a vehicle navigation apparatus comprises: the first step of judging whether the present road is a road on a map data base and judging whether the present location is a cross point; the second step of judging whether there is a road attribute to add because it is the case to drive along the proceeding direction in case that the present location is not a cross point, and judging whether to turn left or to turn right or to go straight or U-turn in case that the present location is a cross point; and the third step of endowing a left turn prohibition attribute if the attribute restriction is a left turn prohibition in case of going straight, and endowing a U-turn prohibition attribute if a U-turn prohibition, and endowing a right-turn prohibition attribute if a right-turn prohibition. According to the method and apparatus, the attribute information on a road or a crossing point at a random specific location can be corrected and added in a conversation mode with a driver through a voice recognition using a DVD-RAM which can read and write a storing medium where map data is stored.
