PURPOSE: A ropeless elevator and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce weight of a cage while maintaining balance of the cage, and to operate plural cages at the same time. CONSTITUTION: A ropeless elevator is formed by a hoistway(10) connected to upper and lower, front and rear, and left and right directions; vertical moving first coils and horizontal moving first coils installed along inner surfaces of the hoistway; and second magnet assembly(A) installed at a separated location from side of the cage. Herein, the magnet assembly moves the cage in response to the first coils. Moreover, the second magnet assembly is formed by a connect rod(41) vertically installed on an upper portion of the cage; a horizontal support plate(50) horizontally arranged at end of the connect rod; horizontal moving second magnet(51) arranged to having specific polarity; vertical support plates(60) arranged on sides of the connect rod; horizontal moving second magnet(61) arranged at left and right ends of the vertical support plates for having specific polarities; and a vertical moving second magnet(62) arranged at a center of the vertical support plates for having specific polarities.
