PURPOSE: A damper is provided to minimize vibration and noise at a washing process. CONSTITUTION: A damper of a washing machine contains a cylindrical damping cap(10) penetrated an inserting slot(11) and combined with an outer tub; a supporting rod(20) combined with an outer case and inserted in the inserting slot(11); a spring(30) inserted inside the damping cap(10); a spring base(40) to support the spring(30) by inserting in the supporting rod(20); a damper base(50) fixed in the supporting rod(20); an elastic pad(60) to have variable friction damping force and air damping force according to a displacement and a load by locating between the spring base(40) and the damper base(50) and inserting in the supporting rod(20); and interval maintaining members(70) to maintain intervals by inserting between the elastic pad(60) and the spring base(40) and between the elastic pad(60) and the damper base(50). In a transient state, the elastic pad(60) is reciprocated through large vibration by supporting through the spring(30). The vibration into the outer case is reduced by friction damping force through the elastic pad(60) and the damping cap(10) and air damping force through air inside the sealed damping cap(10). In a steady state, the vibration is reduced through the air damping force by folding a depressed portion. The excessive folding of the elastic pad(60) is prevented by the spring base(40) and the damper base(50).
