PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal projector which is small in size, lightweight and inexpensive by disposing a light source near a reflection plane, disposing a phase difference element in the front side of the reflection plane, disposing a polarizing beam splitter further in the front side thereof, and disposing first and second reflection type polarizing modulation elements at specified positions. SOLUTION: A light source 11 is disposed near a reflection plane 13, and a phase difference element 12 is disposed in the front side of the reflection plane, and a polarizing beam splitter 7 is disposed further in the front side of the element. A second reflection type polarizing modulation element 9 is disposed in the opposite side of the polarizing beam splitter 7 to the light source 11 side. A first reflection type polarizing modulation element 8 is disposed perpendicular to the second reflection type polarizing modulation element 9 and in the side position of the polarizing beam splitter 7. First polarized light 1 and second polarized light 2 as the incident light is separated by the polarizing beam splitter 7 and modulated by the first and second reflection type polarizing modulation elements 8, 9, respectively. The modulated light beams are synthesized by the polarizing beam splitter 7 and exit as a first modulated polarized light 3 and a second modulated polarized light 4. |
