PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for quickly and accurately measuring the distribution of the refractive index of a preform. SOLUTION: The device for measuring the distribution of the refractive index of an optical fiber base material ingot or a perform for an optical fiber is provided with a suspension part 2 for gripping and suspending the optical fiber base material ingot or a perform 1 for the optical fiber with a dummy part that is attached to the upper end, the suspension part 2 is provided with an upper/lower movement mechanism for measuring the distribution of the refractive index along the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber base material ingot or the perform 1 for the optical fiber and a gripping mechanism 5 for gripping the optical fiber base material ingot or the perform 1 for the optical fiber 1 at upper and lower portions or either of them of the optical measurement part 4 for measuring the refractive index.
