PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially prevent the occurrence of a crash of an SIL head and a recording medium and to improve durability and reliability by rotating a recording medium, allowing a projection removing head to travel floatingly or contactually on its surface and simultaneously executing gas blowing and sucking to remove the projection-like surface defects of the surfaces. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium 11 formed by laminating a reflection layer, recording layer, dielectric layer, etc., in this order on a substrate is rotated by a spindle 12 on a stand 18 via a chuck 15 for holding this medium. While the projection removal head 13 supported by a leaf spring 14 on the surface of the magneto-optical recording medium 11 moves in a radial direction on a direct-acting rail 17, the head travels floatingly or contactually and removes the projection-like defects on the surface. While a blowing nozzle 19 and a sucking nozzle 22 blow and suck the gas on the surface of the magneto-optical recording medium 11 at this time, the nozzles move on direct- acting rails 21 and 24. As a result, the failure by the collision of the SIL head and the recording medium may be prevented.
