PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for judging the direction of a photographic film capable of judging the direction of the photographic film, irrespective of a kind of photographic film. SOLUTION: An image at the side end of the film F is picked up by an image pickup means 15, then, the direction of the film F against the prescribed direction is judged based on the picked up image. In this case, a character image by which the direction against the prescribed direction can be distinguished is previously stored in a memory 1, and the character image included in the image taken by the image pickup means 15 is compared with the character image read from the memory 1 by a deciding means 2, then, the direction of the film F against the prescribed direction is judged.
