PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head capable of reducing the wear of a magnetic head, maintaining a stable contact state between the magnetic head and a magnetic recording medium, and realizing a high reproducing output and a stable enveloping shape even in high-density recording, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: An MR element 1 is held between a pair of substrates 3a and 3b via a protective film 2, wear resistance members 6a and 6b are joined to the outer side of the front and back sides of the magnetic tape traveling direction of the substrates 3a and 3b, and groove-like gap parts 7a and 7b are formed in the joined parts thereof to constitute an MR head tip 11. The MR head tip 11 is joined to a head base 12 to constitute an MR head 10. By supporting a magnetic tape 25 on the wear resistance members 6a and 6b, the floating-up of the magnetic tape 25 on a magnetic conversion part sliding surface 5s is suppressed. Compatibility for wear characteristics is provided to the protective film 2 and the substrates 3a and 3b, and the uneven wear of the protective film 2 is limited. Thus, a short wavelength characteristic and an enveloping shape are improved.
