PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light diffraction element of which the diffracted rays themselves produce specified polarized light such as circularly polarized light or linearly polarized light. SOLUTION: The polarized light diffraction element comprises a supporting substrate, an adhesive layer, a cholesteric liquid crystal layer and a protective layer. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer at least comprises a cholesteric liquid crystal film to which a diffraction pattern of a diffraction element substrate is transferred under a heating and pressurizing condition of 40-300 deg.C and 0.05-80 MPa and which has a region exhibiting diffractiveness formed in a part of it. The protective layer is provided with ultraviolet rays absorbability and/or a hardcoat property.
