PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water resistant protective coating surface which can diffuse a photographic processing solution in an image forming element without blocking and can make the image forming element impermeable to an aqueous solution after exposure and processing. SOLUTION: A gravure cylinder 11 having an outer surface with plural cells is prepared and moved in such a way that the outer surface of the cylinder passes in a coating solution of a film forming organic polymer to fill the cells with the coating solution and an image forming element is moved on the outer surface of the gravure cylinder 11 to stick the coating solution on the image forming element in such a way that 2-98% of the image forming element is not coated with the coating solution. The coating solution is then dried to form a discontinuous coating surface on the image forming element.
